Newsletter #50: September 16-22

This is the final week of summer! Although the mornings and evenings are definitely feeling more like Fall! Many trees are starting to have a tinge of fall colors. I do love this time of year!

There are so many wonderful things about September, and one of the very best things is that it’s apple season! According to the Illinois Extension Agency, there are 2,500 varieties of apples grown in the United States and 7,500 varieties grown throughout the world. The rarest of all apples is called the Black Diamond apple. It is grown in Tibet and has deep, deep purple, almost black skin. Few people have ever eaten this apple, because it is so hard to grow. It is actually a direct relative to the ever popular Red Delicious. (minnetonkaorchards.com)

What’s America’s favorite apple?….the old, trusty Gala. It’s a sweet, crisp apple with a mild flavor. It bakes well, and is great for applesauce and salads. Here are the rest of the top 10 apples: #2 Red Delicious, #3 Granny Smith, #4 Fuji, #5 Honeycrisp, #6 McIntosh, #7 Jonagold, #8 Macoun, #9 Empire, and #10 Pink Lady! My very favorite is a Pink Lady. They are crunchy, tart, and sweet. Yum! Please share what your very favorite is below.

I hope you will consider joining us this week and next for some fun and relaxation at our two craft nights! Each costs $60 and is a guaranteed great time. Please look at the descriptions below in our Events section!

Here’s what’s happening on the outside of Huck’s!

The leaves from across the road on the banks of the Muskingum River are starting to fall, and the wind is carrying them over. Jim has started to blow leaves twice each day. He enjoys getting a chance to be outside during the day, so I know he doesn’t mind this chore at all.

Pumpkins are here! We got a bin of the most beautiful, big, round XL orange pumpkins! They are perfect for your porch or outside Fall decoration until you are ready to carve them with the kiddos next month!

The mums are just as pretty as can be! You can find a variety of all colors in the medium size mum: red, white, yellow, orange, bronze, purple, and pineapple. There are extra large tri color mums in Ghostbuster: dark pink, white, and yellow; Traces of Fall: gold, orange, and coral; Candy Corn: yellow, orange, and white; and Hocus Pocus: orange, purple, and yellow. There are also mums to support your favorite football teams! How fun!

If you would like to add some other fall flowers to your garden, front stoop, or porch, Huck’s has you covered! We have asters, marigolds, cabbage, kale intez celosia, ornamental peppers, sunflowers, coneflowers, and gaillardia.

Corn shocks are here, and it won’t be long until straw bales will be arriving!

Next Friday, September 22nd will start our Huck’s Annual Community Plant Swap! We can’t wait! This perennial plant swap will last through Sunday, October 1st. Please consider sharing some of your beautiful plants, and get some new plants in return! The only charge is a canned good for the Marietta First Church of the Nazarene Food Pantry! Hope you will join in on the fun!

This is a fun time on the inside of the market as well!

Jim got a chance to go to a Mt. Hope auction up in Amish Country yesterday! He got some Amish grown cherry tomatoes, Cortland apples, and watermelon. I think he may have found himself a new business hobby!

We just got in our final 10 dozen ears of local homegrown sweet corn for the year. It’s hard to believe the sweet corn season is over. Better head on in for a couple more suppers with some crisp ears of corn before we run out!

It’s Apple Time! You can find Cortland, Gala, Honeycrisp, Ginger Gold, Fuji, Granny Smith, and Paula Red. More varieties will become available as the fall goes on!

We have local plums and Bartlett pears. They are so sweet and tasty!

The local red cabbage looks so pretty mixed in with the green cabbage. I used some of our green cabbage to make Lazy Man’s Cabbage Rolls for supper the other night. It was a delicious meal! This is one of my favorite things to make…I don’t think it’s anyone else’s favorite in my household though! Ha! #ilovecabbage

You can still find plenty of those red, juicy homegrown Marietta tomatoes! So glad we will still have them for a while!

Who has been waiting for the soup season to begin? ME!! Soups will be starting on Monday! They will be ready for the lunch rush Monday through Friday and will last until they run out! You can’t go wrong with made from scratch soups like Chicken Noodle, Bean Soup with Ham, Tomato, Vegetable Beef, etc. Look for some new varieties this year too! Soups come in both small and large sizes. Soups will be posted daily on hucksmarket.com.

It’s time for……Caramel Apples! Yay! Caramel apples will start this coming week as well. These are homemade right at the market and will come plain or with nuts. Wahoo!

Walnut Creek Apple Cider will be arriving on Wednesday! I know how much you all enjoy this delicious tangy drink for the Fall.

Now that football season is here for the next few months, it’s time to get some food for game time! Try some summer sausage or sliced meats and cheeses with some crackers or freshly baked buns. We have lots of dips to go with crackers, chips, or fresh veggies! Sounds like a tail gating party is a fun idea!

There’s nothing better than a scoop of ice cream! We have three new flavors: Pumpkin Pie, S’mores, and Birthday Cake!

I’m happy to say that I finally got a chance to sit down and make some fall cemetery vases. If you are looking for some fall flowers and colors to garnish your loved one’s headstone, we have you covered. I can also make custom orders as well!

Craft Sale—25% off! The craft section is starting to really get cleared out! That’s just what we like to see! I’m looking forward to making a trip to get more unique crafts in the next couple of weeks. If you have anything that you would like me to try to find, let me know!

Bring a friend, family member, or yourself for a great evening on Friday, September 29th! I know I’m definitely joining for both of the Fall craft nights this month!

Thank you to everyone who came out for to help celebrate our one year Huck’s anniversary! Sydney played Vanna White and did the drawings. Congratulations to the following winners!

The buds on the mums are just starting to open! They are beautiful shades of all the fall colors like red, purple, pineapple, yellow, orange, bronze, and white. Added to that are the asters, gaillardia, ornamental peppers, sunflowers, kale, and cabbage. So pretty!

12 in. Tri-color Mums come in Candy Corn, Ghostbuster, Traces of Fall, and Hocus Pocus. We have all of these, but Hocus Pocus will be in later this week. Also, more pansies will be coming.

Straw and pumpkins will be in this week or early next!

Indian Corn isn’t quite ready yet, but we already have some ordered.

We had a lot of fun growing our little mums this year. Overall, it was a great experience! Our mini mums will be at the store early next week. We have planted some of what we grew into a couple adorable different planters. The mums are white, orange/bronze, and yellow. Check them out!

My mom has the prettiest display using her Huck’s mums. I shared a picture to help get you in the mood for Fall!

Inside is a fun time during the late summer and early fall!

We have locally grown Kennebec potatoes. Did you know a Kennebec potato is less starchy than its potato relatives. This makes for a wonderful mashed potato, and it also holds up nicely in a stew or soup. We have 10 lb. and 50 lb. bags.

All the crafts are 25% off for the next two weeks! I’m wanting to get some things moved out so I can make a trip to Columbus to get some new things! If there’s something you’ve been eyeing, now’s the perfect time to get it! (This sale doesn’t include Duck Creek Candles, Forever Caroline products, or Cornerstone Homestead items.)

We have candy corn! Try mixing it in a bowl with some salted peanuts for a sweet and salty treat that tastes exactly like a Pay Day candy bar! It’s divine!

Our sandwich shop has hundreds of different combinations for sandwiches or salads. Pair that with a variety of choices of snacks, chips, yogurts, or cookies and you have a fresh lunch that is never boring!

Please be on the lookout for some fall style gravestone flower vases later this week. I am also taking orders for Fall saddles for the tops of gravestones. The price of the flower vases are $14.99 and the saddles vary in price but are between $40-$50 depending on what type of flowers you would like! I’ll put pictures of what I get made in next week’s newsletter!

Tracee Hein has still been providing us with some beautiful floral bouquets! She just dropped off sunflowers for $2 each and a few bouquets for $8.99 each. Fresh flowers always make a house look so pretty and put together!

We recently restocked the Yoder’s Good Health Recipe!

If heat is what you’re looking for, try the NEW Devil’s Dust! It is locally made out of homegrown dried hot peppers including: Carolina Reaper and Ghost Pepper. Sprinkle a dash for a little heat….sprinkle a few more shakes if you want your mouth on fire!

EVENT: Huck’s Farm Market’s first annual Community Plant Swap will be happening in just a couple of weeks! Here’s how this plant swap will work…..It starts on Friday, September 22 and will go through Sunday, October 1st. Separate some of your perennials at home, and bring them to Huck’s in separate clumps. We will have tags to label them. Then, you can take home something new for your garden. There is no cost for this plant swap, but we are hoping to get some canned goods and/or non perishable items to donate to the food pantry at the Marietta First Church of the Nazarene. I am really hoping this is a success! I excited, and I am already planning all the plants I have at home in my gardens that I can share with you all!

Here’s what is happening on the inside of the market!

It’s interesting to me how produce availability changes as the growing season goes on! Now that it’s September, we know that the days of vine ripened tomatoes and string beans will be coming to a close. Please take advantage as much as you can! Everything is still plentiful!

On a side note….I just learned yesterday that Ecuador is one of the only countries in the world with a varied bounty of produce all year round! It’s on the equator, so it always has warm crops like berries, tomatoes, etc., but it is also has a cooler, mountainous region which supplies the country with colder weather crops like apples, beets, and carrots. I love to learn about other countries and their different cultures.

We are so happy to announce a new partnership with Sage and Co.! This local business is located in Marietta and is a small batch spice company. We are carrying their line of Appalachian Spices and Rubs. You will find Farmer’s Favorite Veggie Seasoning, Cowboy Caviar Seasoning, Garlic Herb & Cheese Popcorn Seasoning, Appalachian Fish & Seafood Seasoning, and Sweet Smoky BBQ Rub. Welcome to Huck’s, Sage and Co. We are glad to have ya!

Forever Caroline has added some recipe cards to their inventory! Here’s what owner, Julie Harding, has has to say about adding these beautiful recipe cards to her business….”As the days grow shorter and the weather cooler, memories of time spent in my grandmother’s kitchen grow ever more vivid. Whether baking with her grandchildren or cooking a birthday meal for each and every family member, Gram (our Caroline) loved to create traditions around food.” These recipe cards come with a selection of 8 different pictures. I’m sure that gives you all cozy memories of your grandmas cooking, plus there is nothing like a handwritten recipe card! It sure does beat a printed out recipe from the Internet or from a cook book!

If you are looking for a gift, check out our crafts, candles by Duck Creek, soaps and scrubs by Cornerstone Homestead, and notepads and cards by Forever Caroline!

Be sure to stop in on Saturday for a chance to win!

Here’s our update for the outside!

The first round of mums and other fall beauties have arrived! We have mums in all colors: the 8″ come in red , yellow, bronze, orange, pink, and white. 12″ mums come in yellow and pineapple. The 12″ tri color mums come in Candy Corn, Ghostbuster, Traces of Fall, and Hocus Pocus.

There are pansies, jumbo marigolds, black eyes Susans, cabbage and kale, Jack-o-lantern planters with black petunias, celosia, and some mixed fall planters.

The Team Themed mums are cute! You can choose from Ohio State, WVU, Steelers, Browns, and/or Bengals. The mums are not blooming yet, but will be a coordinating color….for example: a bronze mum for the Browns planter. These are perfect for football season!

……And the ornamental peppers are just the absolute cutest little things I have ever seen! FYI: Don’t try to eat these 🙂

Here is our weekly update for the inside!

Fresh bouquets will be coming sometime this weekend from Tracee Hein. Cost is $8.99 for Zinnia bouquets and $12.99 for bouquets with the velvety Celosia! She grows some beautiful things, so it’s a great way to support a local farm as well as add a splash of color inside your house! One tip to keep bouquets lasting longer….change out the water every other day.

Let’s all keep enjoying the local produce for the next couple of months: Peaches, apples, onions, potatoes, green peppers, sweet peppers, hot peppers, jalapenos, eggplant, cucumbers, zucchini, squash, celery, carrots, cauliflower, lettuce, sweet potatoes, cantaloupe, and watermelon. Yum!

Do you want to can, but your garden didn’t bring the yield you were hoping? Or do you love to can but not the gardening part? Let us help with that! We will be adding canning tomatoes this week! We are learning a lot about produce….canning tomatoes are a meatier tomato with less juice and less seeds. Their skin is easier to peel once it’s been put in a water bath. I read about some of the best types of tomatoes to can….Amish Paste, Roma, Brandywine, and Beefsteak are some of the most popular!

If you need canning supplies we have some for you! We have Ball’s jars and lids. There certainly is something special about having your own jars that you canned yourself. There is nothing prettier than a cellar or pantry filled with home canned goods!

We have three glazes for you to make your very own summer peach, strawberry, or blueberry pie. Yum!

Don’t forget about Forever Caroline’s back to school sale! Note pads are $10, and the little love notes are just $9.99. Perfect for lists and little messages to your loved ones!

We hope that you are liking the delicious new dips! You can choose from French Onion, Sun Dried Tomato and Basil, Cucumber Dill, Spinach Dip, and Bacon and Onion. These dips have the directions on them of how to make them. Most use just sour cream or sour cream and cream cheese.

Try the Walnut Creek Pumpkin Pecan Butter that has just arrived! Eat in on toast for breakfast or a buttered roll at lunch or supper! Yum!

If you are looking for a gift, check out our crafts, candles by Duck Creek, soaps and scrubs by Cornerstone Homestead, and notepads and cards by Forever Caroline!

Cue the Christmas song…..“It’s the most wonderful time of the year”…..it’s back to school time! I think that Staples commercial is really funny where the dad is school shopping with his children and singing that song through the aisles because they are ready to get them back into school for the new year. Lol. (FYI: That commercial is now 10 years old!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aHpOYzHdSg8 It is a wonderful time of year! Teachers have been busy getting their rooms ready for our students this year. A new school year comes with a lot of excitement and jitters, so pray that all our area schools have great starts to their year! I pray our students all feel happy, make good friends, and that their minds are open and ready to learn; and that the teachers and administrators all have a successful and productive year! Amen!

Our first craft night of the fall is Friday evening (25th) at 6:00 pm. Duffy Sprague is going to be helping us make either your choice of a wooden pumpkin or a wooden leaf. It will be adorned with these changeable fall sayings…Hello, Fall! Boo! and Thankful. It will be accented with a fall bow and some faux fall flowers. This can be made into a door hanger, something on your wall, or propped up somewhere in your house. If you’re a regular or a newbie, come join on on the side porch! Cost is $60 for a fun, crafty night out! I also guarantee Duffy’s crafts are always high quality and well worth the price! Sign up by Tuesday and make sure you tell us if you would like a leaf or a pumpkin.

Would you like a chance to win a freezer full of Zimmerview’s meat for the winter time? Jim and I are both a part of the Marietta Tigers Athletic Boosters. This great organization is trying to raise money for our Tiger student-athletes and sports programs. Tickets are $10 a piece and can be bought right at the Huck’s counter. You would get a brand new freezer filled with half a beef! With a value of approximately $2200, $10 is a great price to pay for some delicious ribeyes, porterhouse steaks, roasts, ground beef, etc. Drawing will be held October 20th! Thanks for support our sports at Marietta City Schools!

Countdown to our Anniversary Celebration! 2 weeks from today on Saturday, September 2nd, come on in and enjoy 20% on everything at Huck’s! We are looking forward celebrating a great first year with you all! We are planning to have samples of yummy items as well! We hope to see you there!

Here’s our weekly update for outside…..

Not too much going on outside right now. Jim has been busy getting things ready cleaned up and ready for the fall flowers! We’ve got some delightful things that will be here before we know it! I’m dreaming of my front porch with all sorts of fall colors, straw, and corn shocks! This may be my favorite time of the year on our front porch! The colors are so pretty and the evenings are cool.

Don’t forget to enjoy your lunch on our side porch! It’s shady and being outside on your lunch break can make for a very productive afternoon at work!

Is there anything in your garden that you have been happy to see back in bloom again this year? Each August, I always look forward to the Luna Hibiscus in my back garden blooming! It has a dark pink center surrounded by giant, bright white petals. If you’ve never seen one, the blooms are the size of a dinner plate! According to the LSU Ag Center, “Luna Hibiscus does not disappoint with very large 7-8” blooms in colors of red, rose, white, pink, and pink swirl……This plant is a great addition to the butterfly garden.” This gorgeous plant just might need to be added to your garden this fall or next spring!

Now onto the inside!

Here is a list of the delicious produce available at Huck’s: lettuce, cauliflower, carrots, baby carrots, green peppers, red peppers, hot peppers, eggplant, sweet peppers, cabbage, zucchini, squash, onions, Oso sweet onions, cantaloupe, sugar cubes cantaloupe, potatoes, sweet potatoes, lemons, limes, pears, peaches, nectarines, and apples (Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, Fuji, and Gala)

The bakery is bustling with freshly baked items for your kitchen every morning. Our bakers do their very best to provide you all with delicious breads, cookies, pies, strudels, cinnamon rolls, whoopie pies, and brownies! We are now offering home baked hot dog buns!

Check out the Back to School sale being offered by Forever Caroline! All of her notepads are now $10.00! Also have you seen her sweet little Love Notes? They are perfect for leaving a special surprise for your kiddos in their lunchboxes or backpacks! These are only $9.99. Just a reminder that all of the artwork on all of the Forever Caroline products are done by Appalachian artists, one of whom lives in Devola!

Over the last week in the sandwich shop, we have started to use the Amish Wedding brand of sweet pickles, hamburger dill pickles, and candied jalapenos. Yum! These are also available in glass jars on our shelves.

You guys love the caramel cremes! I’m glad that you love old-fashioned candies as much as we do!

We added Mocha Meltaways to our Dutch Delights inventory! Come in and get a bag of assorted fine chocolates! It’s a nice way to treat yourself after a long day!

Look who has a green thumb?? One of my dearest friends, Robyn Knaus, grew these beautiful decorative gourds for fall! They are golden yellow with a deep green bottom. She was overrun with tons of these gourds and thought she would bring them to Huck’s to share with you! You are the best, Robyn!

Mister Bee’s potato chips has a couple of new flavors of chips with a new look! Try Pepperoni Roll potato chips or (304) Style potato chips. Don’t those sound interesting? Like it says, “It’s the Bee’s Knees!”

I hope you check out our display of all different types of dips. These dips would go perfectly with some Breton crackers, potato chips, pretzel sticks, and/or veggies! You can choose from French Onion, Sun Dried Tomato and Basil, Cucumber Dill, Spinach Dip, and Bacon and Onion. These dips have the directions on them of how to make them. Most use just sour cream or sour cream and cream cheese.

Spin around our little jewelry rack to find scrunchies from Sew Cute Scrunchies, bracelets from Bracelets by Audrey, and some vintage earring and jewelry.

We love having fresh flowers in the store right now from local Lowell farm Hein-Alsbach Gardens. What a talented and gifted couple! There are some sunflowers and hydrangeas (which are great for drying) and the sweetest little Zinnia bouquet. Prices are very reasonable, plus you’re supporting a local farm!

Start looking for some pumpkin and fall items to be coming to our shelves soon! We are starting with Walnut Creek Pecan Pumpkin Butter! Yes!

If you are looking for a gift, check out our crafts, candles by Duck Creek, soaps and scrubs by Cornerstone Homestead, and notepads and cards by Forever Caroline!

Newsletter #45: August 12-18

Hi, everybody!! Another week has come and gone! This has been a big clean out week at our house. It sure feels good to get everything scrubbed down, organized, and cleaned out, but I’m kicking myself for waiting until two weeks before school starts to start! Maybe some of you can relate. Lol.

The countdown is on! In 3 days, it will be National Relaxation Day! Who knew that was even a thing? I know I’ve never heard of it before. Anyway, it has been celebrated in the United States since 1985. I can dream of a lot of things I would like to do if I had an entire day to relax. One thing’s for sure, it would not involve any type of cleaning or organizing! Ha!

Area fall sports and activities have started and some have even had scrimmages and games. Good luck to all our area teams! It gives a lot of people a lot of enjoyment watching these sporting events and activities, so just know we are all rooting for ya!

Here’s the weekly update for outside!

We put in our first fall flower order! Can’t wait to get the outside decorated and ready for the beautiful, fall months ahead! We have some gorgeous combination mums coming….Hocus Pocus, Candy Corn, Ghost Buster, and Traces of Fall! There will also be mums of every color, mum baskets, pansies, black eyed Susans, ornamental peppers, blanket flowers, and asters. These will come in a variety of sizes and colors.

We also ordered mums in football team containers! Hopefully, we have your favorite team: Buckeyes, Mountaineers, Browns, Bengals, and Steelers. (Sorry to all you Michigan fans….Jim couldn’t bring himself to click on the button to order these! Just teasing…it wasn’t an option.)

We will also have bales of straw, pumpkins, and corn shucks as well! The first order will be in the week of Labor Day weekend. It’s not too early to start thinking of what you want!

Here is the update for the inside of the market….

The produce section is moving and shaking as everyone is enjoying the fresh, local produce available! Here is a list of everything that we have: peaches, nectarines, blueberries, blackberries, corn on the cob, onions, sweet potatoes, potatoes, bananas, hot peppers, green peppers, cabbage, cucumbers, mushrooms, carrots, celery, zucchini, yellow squash, cauliflower, broccoli, green beans, strawberries, watermelon, cantaloupe, and tomatoes!

Check out the picture below of one of our large cookie trays! Fresh, home baked cookies in whatever kinds you want! They really are perfect for any occasion!

You will now see hot dog buns freshly baked each morning in our bakery. Sounds like we all need to add chili dogs or a polish sausage with peppers and onions to our weekly menu, so we can try this new item!

Huck’s is happy to be partnering with Hein-Alsbach Gardens Farm in Lowell to provide our customers with some lovely, fresh cut flower bouquets! I got to know Tracee, because she subs often in our school building. She’s also a wonderful artist! Here’s what she shared with me about her farm….Our family farmhouse was built sometime around 1850, and my husband and I have been working on the property about 30 years. We moved here June of 2000 I believe. We’ve planted hundreds of trees and have extensive flower beds and some veggies. We like to can, make sauerkraut, etc. Tracee is going to be bringing sunflower bouquets this morning (Sat) and then will be bringing more types as they begin to bloom! Let’s bring some sunny color to our kitchen or coffee tables!

Duck Creek Candle Co. has just restocked with some fall scents! Check out Pumpkin Buttercream. Iced Gingersnaps, Snickerdoodle, Appalachian Pine, and Caramel Sugar Cookie. Oh, my, these smell perfect!

We have restocked the Yoder’s Good Health Recipe Tonic. Its motto is…. It puts a pep in your step!

Jumbo dill pickles are cooling in the deli for $.99 each. They can add the perfect crunch on the side of your deli sandwich!

If you are looking for a gift, check out our crafts, candles by Duck Creek, soaps and scrubs by Cornerstone Homestead, and notepads and cards by Forever Caroline!

Newsletter #24: August 5th-11th

Well, hello, everyone! Hope you have had a great couple of weeks! The Goeller Family had a great trip to Disney World. Our goal was to see and ride as much as we could in our three days at the parks, and I think we did that! I’m still yawning! Little Sydney wanted to wait in every line to see the princesses and characters, and Cinderella and Olaf were her favorites!

I know it’s been nice and hot, but can you all feel a little bit of Fall in the air? The evenings and the mornings are a little bit cooler, and believe it or not, I have seen a few dead leaves here or there starting to fall. The cicadas/crickets/katydids are nice and loud too. (I looked up what insects that I’m hearing this time of year, and I couldn’t get an exact answer.) This reminds me of how my dad always said, “Fall doesn’t happen overnight.” I think he was right!

Michigan Tart Cherry orders have arrived, so if you haven’t gotten in yet to get them, please do! We have heard all sorts of things you all are doing with your cherries: pie filling, tart cherry juice, wine, etc. One thing is for sure….tart cherries are one of nature’s candies and great for inflammation!

Did you know that our one year anniversary of owning Huck’s is almost here? We took over on September 3rd, 2022! Please come join us on September 3rd this year for a store-wide sale of 20% off! All of us at Huck’s want to show our customers our thanks and appreciation!

We had another wonderful craft evening last Thursday! We cross-stitched and started some adorable ornaments. It was peaceful and relaxing on the side porch. As my sister said, “This is a great place to come and cross-stitch!” We will put another cross stitch pattern on our calendar soon!

Here’s our outside update….

The whole building is just about painted! What a great feeling to have that almost done!

We just received our order form for Fall flowers! There are going to be some beautiful mums, asters, cabbage, kale, ornamental peppers, etc. coming in the next couple of weeks! We are planning on having some in the last week of August! I literally cannot wait!

Here’s our update for the inside of the market….

Produce is still in full swing, and it is delicious! I have been eating tomato sandwiches for the past week with a little mayo, salt, and pepper, and I mean it when I say that our area’s local tomatoes are the absolute best! The ones that just arrived a couple days ago are huge and a beautiful shade of red! We have a customer driving all the way from Youngstown, Ohio to pick up some well-known, high quality Marietta tomatoes! Yum!

We have corn on the cob, blueberries, peaches, nectarines, cabbages, hot peppers, onions, potatoes, strawberries, zucchini, squash, bananas, Washington State apples, cantaloupe, carrots, blackberries, and watermelon waiting for you to pick up.

I met a gentleman yesterday who was going to make some homemade hot pepper jelly with some of our beautiful, hot peppers. Sounds like a great idea!

We just got in some pie glazes for peach, blueberry , and strawberry pies for those of you who enjoy making your own pies this time of year!

The bakery is always wafting out yummy smells from all the home baked pies, cookies, breads, strudels, cinnamon rolls, etc. Be on the lookout for home baked hot dog buns and Pumpernickel Bread. They will both be on the shelves soon!

It’s nice to see that you are trying the new yogurts that we got in from September Farms. They are so tangy and tasty. Our new flavors are Plain, Vanilla, and Lemon Honey. These are a great addition to Blueberry, Peach, Raspberry, and Strawberry. They come in 6 oz. little containers and are the perfect side for your lunch if you are wanting to stay away from the cookie rack! You can find them in the same cooler underneath the Florence Creamery milk!

Here are the ice cream flavors that we have right now: Cherry Nut, Kentucky Praline, Dutch Chocolate, Cookies and Cream, Vanilla, Cold Coffee Brew, Strawberry, and Cookie Dough. Order it in a dish, cake cone, sugar cone, or waffle cone. We also can put it in a little container to go! It’s up to you!

If you haven’t tried it yet, you could sample the new Walnut Creek Bacon Cheese or the Walnut Creek Peppered Turkey! We are hearing great reviews!

Beth Huck is making some from scratch Red Velvet and Wedding Cake cupcakes. These are up in the deli area by the sandwich shop. If you haven’t tried them, prepare to be amazed by their deliciousness!

Huck’s can do all sorts of custom made meat, cheese, veggie, fruit, and sandwich trays. These are perfect for meetings, parties, get togethers, reunions, funerals, etc. You can call us at 740-374-2484, message us on Facebook, email us at hucksfarmmarket@gmail.com, or send us a fax at 740-373-0024.

Newsletter #43: July 22-July 28

Yay!! We are so excited and want to say a BIG thank you for all your votes during the 2023 Marietta Times Reader’s Choice Awards. We were surprised and thrilled to hear that Huck’s Farm Market won 3 awards and were finalists in 3 categories! Jim and I passed out when we heard. (I’m teasing, but we are so happy!) Huck’s Farm Market is the winner for…

*Best Deli

*Best Sandwich

*Best Sub

We were finalists in the categories of Lunch, Farm Market, and Produce Store! Wahoo!

That being said….come try out our deli, sandwich shop, and produce if you haven’t already! Not to mention our bakery, grocery items, dairy items, crafts, candles, snacks, candies, chocolates, jams, jellies, canned goods, etc. I know I have said it before, but Jim and I are in 7th heaven owning Huck’s. It is just such a fun place! There really is something in here for everyone.

We are driving to Disney World on Sunday, so I won’t be able to do a newsletter next week. We haven’t been to Disney in about 10 years, so the kids are all looking forward to it. I saw my principal who just went with his family. He said they logged 28 miles over the two days they were at the parks! We do have pool days scheduled in between for rest and recovery! Ha!

Our deli specials will last two weeks. They are listed at the bottom of the newsletter.

Looking for something fun to do: Don’t forget the ice cream social at the old Reno School on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. Also, check out the castle on 4th street for a tour or the Valley Gem for a riverboat ride. If you are looking for a bigger day trip, the Ohio State Fair starts July 26 and runs through August 6. We love the Ohio State Fair! A shout out to my niece, Maddy, and Gracie Morris from our 4-h Club for qualifying with their projects at the state fair. Good luck, girls!

Here’s our weekly update for outside!

We are continuing on with the painting of the building! We now only have the back side to do, plus some staining of the sign and pergola area. It’s coming along slowly but surely!

Our mums are still growing nicely! Look for the first shipment of mums to come in late August! Our homegrown ones won’t be ready by then quite yet, but we will make sure we have lots at the beginning as well! What’s your favorite color of mum? I think you can never go wrong with the yellow, white, and orange, but I also love the purple, pink, red, and bronze as well!

Here’s our update for inside:

Produce is in its prime and is getting rave reviews by our customers. Here is what you can find….

Cantaloupe, sweet corn, cucumbers, watermelon, blackberries, blueberries, green beans, cabbage, nectarines, peaches, strawberries, tomatoes (red, yellow, and green), Roma tomatoes, hot peppers, green peppers, zucchini, and squash

We may take tomatoes grown here in Marietta for granted, but two customers this week, one from Virginia and another from Texas stopped in specifically to get Marietta tomatoes! If you haven’t tried some yet this summer, come grab a few!

We decided to get a few more new items added to our inventory! Read below to see what new items you can now find at Huck’s!

Deli: Peppered Turkey and Bacon Cheese

Candies: Old Fashioned Caramel Cremes (by the lb. or in a bag)

New types of fudge: Lemon, Birthday Cake, and Dark Chocolate Mint

One of our bakers, Beth Huck, has been adding a couple of types of cupcakes each week. Last week, she made Peanut Butter Overload and Death by Chocolate. This week she will have Birthday Cake and Carrot Cake. These are from scratch cupcakes, and they are divine! Each cupcake is $2.49 and make the perfect after lunch dessert or afternoon pick me up!

Newsletter #42: July 15-21

Hello! How has another week already come and gone? They sure do come and go so quickly! As cool as June was, July has certainly turned out to be nice and hot!

Seth’s Post 64 American Junior Legion team just ended their season. They were District Runner Up Champions! What a great team to watch, and they had great coaches as well! There’s nothing quite like watching a baseball game in the summer time. It’s relaxing and so enjoyable!

Aren’t you thankful for friends that you haven’t seen in such a long time, but you can pick up just like it’s been a week? I got to have lunch this past week with one my best besties from middle school/high school, and we had a wonderful time. I think we could have talked all day! Maybe this will spark you to reach out to a friend you haven’t seen in a long time! I guarantee you will be glad you did!

We had another wonderful class last night! We made 8 more icons for the Welcome signs we made in June! There is another one of these classes next Thursday! We may do another one of those sign classes. Let Duffy or I know if that’s something you would be interested in! Also, check out our upcoming classes below. I’ve said it before, they really are fun and there are many more in the works!

I had to include a picture of the three little country kittens that were born out at home! Aren’t they cute?

Here’s our update for outside of the market!

We have been painting away this week in the afternoons and early evenings. A big thank you to our family friend, Leeanna, for helping! We couldn’t do it without her! Seeing her paint up high makes me wish I was taller than 5’3″ inches (minus a half inch)! Lol. We have the front and the porch side done. Now, it’s on to the side facing Devola and then to the back. Kudos to those of you who have painted the outside of a house or a building before! It’s not a job for the faint of heart! Ha!

Jim and I are enjoying watching our little mums grow. It’s amazing how much they grow in a week’s time. We still have them pretty close together while they are small. As time goes on, we will have to get them separated, so they can grow to their potential.

Here’s our inside update…..

Here’s our produce list for the upcoming week!

Local/Homegrown: tomatoes (red, yellow, green), cabbage (they look beautiful!), zucchini, yellow squash, blueberries, cantaloupe (the best around), corn on the cob (Yum!), candy onions, beets, cucumbers, and Southern watermelon

Local blackberries will be coming in the next couple of days!

I don’t know if you can get corn any better than the local corn we have in the market. It’s sweet and crisp! Try some and let us know if you agree!

“I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!” Sunday is National Ice Cream Day! Stop in to Huck’s for that smooth and creamy Velvet ice cream! We have cups, cake cones, sugar cones, and waffle cones. Get one, two, or three scoops! Don’t miss a day to celebrate ice cream! I tried to find a Ice Cream Social coming up to tell you about, but the ones I found have already passed. If you know of one, put it in the comments below!

I want to give you my review for Raspberry Fudge Velvet Ice Cream. First of all, it has the best raspberry flavor. It has the perfect, summer sweetness. Then, comes the fudge part….Do you know how Moose Tracks has tiny little peanut butter cups in it? Well, this actually has tiny, raspberry filled, dark chocolate cups swirled throughout! Wow! I literally give Raspberry Fudge a perfect 10!!!

Five flavors of Kutztown Old-Fashioned Sodas are on the shelf in 4 packs or sold individually in the cooler with the other drinks. You will find: Orange Cream, Sarsaparilla, Red Cream, Root Beer, and Ginger Beer.

We also got in lots of different flavors of tea. I tried the Lemon with Mint from Menno! It is so refreshing!

Our younger son, Seth, wants me to share his favorite sandwich with you all this week! He gets a white 6 in.
sub (but he could probably eat a 2 ft. sub….anyone feeding teenagers at home knows exactly what I’m talking about!) with turkey, ham, white American cheese, lettuce, jalapeños, and mayonnaise.

Community Plant Swap: Friday, September 22-Sunday, October 1st.

This is going to last over two weekends! Bring in a part of some of your healthy plants that need divided, and get other plants to plant in your garden! This is free, but we are asking for a canned good or non-perishable food item which will be donated to the First Church of the Nazarene’s food pantry! They get many families that come in every week in need, so this is a great way to do something nice for our community.

Would you like to book a private class for your friend group, family, church group, work group, etc.? Call in or message us, and we can get a fun class planned!

Newsletter #41: July 7-14

It’s time for the Marietta Riverfront Roar! This fun event in downtown Marietta started last night and will last until Sunday at 4:00 pm. There will be races, music, and fireworks tonight at 9:30 pm. Stop by Huck’s to get a yummy sandwich and some snacks while you enjoy all the festivities!

Here is our update for outside this week….

I’m hoping for dry afternoons, because we are going to get the painting outside finished and done this week! I can’t wait to get this checked off our to do list!

Our little mums at home are looking strong and are growing nicely!

Once your million bells, petunias, and verbena start looking dried out and spindly, cut them back and then fertilize them. This will give a nice boost to the plant and new blooms will be on their way soon after! (familyhandyman.com)

If you haven’t mulched yet, it is one of the best ways to care for your summer garden! Spreading it about 2 inches thick is ideal. It helps protect the roots, keeps the ground cooler, and holds moisture better. Better Homes and Gardens says that you don’t have to get something special….even leaves or pine needles work! Whichever mulch you choose will break down and add rich nutrients to the soil. Plus, a nicely mulched garden looks so sharp! Which color of mulch do you like best?

Here’s our inside update!

Fresh produce! Come enjoy Nature’s Bounty!

Local/homegrown: Marietta tomatoes and Marietta corn on the cob are here! Also, zucchini, yellow squash, cabbage, blueberries, and candied onions!

From the South: watermelon and cantaloupe

Local produce will continue to boom over the next few weeks! Look for local cucumbers, watermelons, and peppers to becoming next!

Thank you for all the Michigan Tart Cherry orders. The order has been placed. If you weren’t able to get in to pay for your cherries yet, no worries, we were still able to order them. They should be in on Wednesday, August 2nd in the afternoon. We will keep you updated as time gets closer!

We are starting to get a pretty decent sized clearance section in our crafts. It’s over by the chips area. There are 4th of July items, Easter and Spring things, and even a few things left from winter. Check it out if you have a couple of extra minutes!

Did you know that yesterday was World Chocolate Day? Me neither. Lol. I saw it on Facebook. So, in honor of that, here are the things at Huck’s you could get that have chocolate in them….Brownie Cookies, Chocolate Chip Cookies, Chocolate Chunk Cookies, Dark Chocolate Covered Almonds, Chocolate covered pretzels, Dutch Delights in both chocolate and sugar free, English Toffee Mix, Nut and Sweety Mix, Homemade Brownies, Florence Creamery Chocolate Milk, and our many ice cream flavors dedicated to chocolate lovers, etc. Don’t ask Jim his favorite, because he doesn’t like chocolate!

Cool off with some Velvet Hand-Dipped Ice Cream! Here are the flavors we have right now: Cold Brew Coffee, Dutch Chocolate, Vanilla, Cookies and Cream, Peach, Raspberry Fudge, Cherry Nut, Mint Chocolate Chip. We can even order large tubs for a summer party or reception!

But I will share with you his favorite sandwich from the sandwich shop! He likes a roast beef Kaiser with bacon, Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, banana peppers, mayo, salt, and pepper. There are lots of choices. I know he’s happy to eat a sandwich or a salad every day for lunch!
