It’s the first full week of March! We have had a couple of beautiful evenings this week! Have you seen the planets out as well? My brother took a great picture Wednesday night of Venus and Jupiter beside each other. By the time I got a chance to look, it was too cloudy. Guess that’s my luck!

Check out our display to promote 4-H! My sister, Amy, our wonderful friend, Missy Hartline, and I are the advisors of the Lynch Combined 4-H group. The Lynch Combined 4-H club is the oldest club in Washington County and was founded by the Duckworth Family. The three of us grew up doing 4-H and love being advisors as well! There are lots of great clubs all throughout the county and many of them are taking new members (Lynch Combined is as well)! Next week, I’ll tell you about different projects offered! Registration deadline for the new year of 4-H is April 1st!

Next Friday night (March 10), the Marietta Tigers Athletic Boosters will be sponsoring the movie “Top Gun: Maverick” at the MHS Auditorium. The cost is $5 per person/$20 max per person. Doors and concessions open at 6:30 pm and the movie starts at 7:30 pm. Please spread the word!

For the next few weeks, I am going to write about Appalachia. It is the place that many of us have grown up, and it is the place where many of us have chosen to stay and raise our families. The Ohio Valley, located in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains, is a beautiful place that we all love. The Appalachian Mountains are unique for several different reasons. They cover 1,500 miles from Maine all the way down to Georgia. They are also about 200 miles wide. This is mostly one continuous area. They are also covered in dense forest with evergreen firs in the north and at higher elevations. Deciduous trees like birch and oak engulf the central and southern parts as well as lower elevations. This makes for beautiful seasons for nature lovers! What’s your favorite season? (peakbagger.com)

Outside update…..

Jim is continuing to get the outside spruced up! There’s not much time left now! Check out the pic of his progress!

There are officially 16 days until the first day of Spring. It’s amazing how fast the winter has gone!

I am so happy to announce that onion sets have arrived!! They are actually inside, but I included them in the outside update since they are for the garden. I had to look up some information about onion sets, since a lot of this is new to me 🙂 Onion sets are different than seeds, because they are actually year old onions. They were planted as seeds and dug up after a year. In zone 6 (our gardening zone), you are supposed to plant them between mid-March and mid-April, and you will get an onion crop in late fall. You can also plant onion sets in the fall and get onions ready to harvest next June. The only downfall that I see with onion sets is there is less of variety than seeds. We have red and yellow onion sets right now. Jim said we can also get white and sweet onion sets, so I will keep you updated on when those come in!

Here are two fun facts about flowers to help get us in the mood for all the gardening fun that is to come!

Did you know that many of our very favorite fruits are in the rose family? Yes! Apples, cherries, peaches, pears, raspberries, and strawberries are all related to the flower of love!

Can you guess which spring flower was once more valuable than GOLD?……Tulips! In the 1600s, tulip bulbs in Holland were worth more than gold. This was called “Tulip Mania” and caused the country’s whole economy to crash!

Inside things are buzzing along as usual!

One reason that I’m writing about Appalachia is that we are partnering with another local small business owned by Julie Harding called Forever Caroline! Forever Caroline offers individual greeting cards, love notes, boxed notecard sets, and note pads from Appalachian artists! One of her featured artists, Beth Nash, is from our area. Much of the artwork featured has been inspired by Appalachia and its way of life. They are beautiful and would make a great gift for a family member or friend!

Don’t forget to get some Homemade Clam Chowder with Bay Biscuits on Fridays through Lent! Also, we now have egg salad!

Nothing says St. Patty’s Day like corned beef or a Reuben sandwich! Corned beef has arrived at Huck’s in the deli section!

New Item! Walnut Creek Sweetheart Jam! It has cherries, strawberries, red raspberries, and passion fruit. I’ll put some on my grocery list and tell you how it is next week.

We now have packages of Soup Base…..look for Low-Sodium Chicken and Beef!

We have restocked our Amish Wedding salsas and Walnut Creek ketchup.

If you haven’t noticed, Zimmerview Farm has put a freezer for their ground beef and sausage inside Huck’s! It’s very convenient to grab one, and there will be a new shipment of ground sausage this morning!

We now Colonial Pies for Two! They are adorable! They have an open top and are the perfect size for two people or if you don’t want to buy a full pie. Also, don’t forget about our Amish made from scratch fry pies.

Crafts are still on sale!! 20% off! The only exclusions are the wonderful items from Cornerstone Homestead, Duck Creek Candle Co., and Forever Caroline.

The Yoder’s Good Health Tonic is selling! I’m hearing some good reviews from some of you who have bought it!

We are looking for some local honey to add to our inventory. If you know of any beekeepers in our area who make honey, please let us know!

Kennebec potatoes grown in Maine are only $0.79 per pound! Yum!
