Newsletter #37: June 3-9

“School’s out for summer!” I can’t help but sing the rock song by Alice Cooper! I know everyone is ready for a little R and R this summer! I’m looking forward to getting things cleaned out and organized around the house and spending some more time at Huck’s! I hope to get to see many of you there as well!

A couple of weekends ago, our 4-H group did one of our annual community service projects. We put new flags at the graves of local veterans at three local, rural cemeteries. We always start at the Lynch Church Cemetery, then we head out to Berg Church Cemetery, and lastly to St. Jacob’s Cemetery on Glendale Extension. This is one of our favorite service projects, and there are probably 120 military graves at just these three cemeteries!

Anyway….if you are looking for something to do on a Sunday afternoon, head to the Berg Cemetery off of Reeds Run in Stanleyville. They open up the old church for visitors each Sunday through the summer! You can sign the visitor’s book and look at all the old hymnals and records from the church. The oldest ones are in German. German immigrants settled there in the mid-1800s. Barbara Gearhart Matt has even published books translating these early records. We thought it was really interesting! It would definitely be worth your while!

Here’s our outside update….

All live flowers and vegetable plants are 25% off starting today (Saturday)! Come out and see if you can find one more pretty plant for your porch or flower beds. Or maybe you want to do a few more tomato or herb plants in your left over pots.

Jay Huck is dropping off some more flowers tomorrow morning. I’m not sure everything that he has, but they will certainly be pretty! Plus, with the 25% discount, it’s a win-win situation!

Thanks for a great flower season! We weren’t sure what to expect with it being our first year, but we learned a lot and enjoyed it so much! It was a good starting point for us, and we hope to have more to offer in the years to come!

Check out the rooster my brother, Chad, refurbished for our front door area! He welded it back together and painted it red, yellow, and black. I think it looks great, Brother!

Here’s our weekly update about inside…..

A new shipment of local homegrown strawberries will be here today!

We are so excited to have a new vendor that will be at Huck’s starting later this week or next! We will now be selling local pasture raised chicken from Peck’s Farm in Waterford, Ohio! I have known Amber Peck for many years now. She is the President of the Farmer’s Market downtown, and she and her husband are great, hard-working people! Stop in and try a package! It will be in our walk in freezer to start, so you will just need to ask! We will have boneless breasts, thighs, wings, and chicken sausage (sweet and spicy and salt and pepper)!

Yoder’s Good Health Recipe Tonic has been re-ordered and will be in this week! If you haven’t tried this vinegar health concoction as part of your health regimen, you just might want to start! It’s slogan is “It puts some pep in your step!” Jim and I agree!

Our baked goods are baked fresh each morning by the best bakers around!

Have you seen our mini loaves of bread? This is a good solution to those of you who can’t eat an entire loaf of bread quick enough! They are cute and you get all the yummy goodness of a full loaf….just tinier!

Our Walnut Creek snack area is full! We got in some pretzel balls! A handful is the perfect crunchy snack if you are looking for something salty.

It sure has been hot outside, so don’t forget about our Velvet hand-dipped ice cream! We have been starting to sell tubs for birthdays and weddings, so keep that as an option for your upcoming celebrations!

Now that school is out, and I have a little more time, I’m going to be heading up to Columbus to get some crafts to spruce up the front of the store! Look for lots of new items later this week!

We have packaged up some Cucumber Dill Dip and French Onion Dip from Walnut Creek! You know it is good quality if it has their name! Mix it with a small tub of Walnut Creek sour cream from our dairy case (it will be in on Wednesday), and you have the perfect party or snack dip for veggies, pretzels, or chips! Yum!

If you notice a lot of thumbs up in my pictures this week, that is Little Syd giving her approval! Lol! She was following me around as I was taking pictures and sticking her thumb in, so we just went with it. As you will be able to see, she broke her arm the week before school let out, so we are praying for a speedy recovery!

Newsletter #36: May 27-June 3

Happy Memorial Day weekend! This weekend is considered the official start of summertime! I know there are a few more weeks until the Summer Solstice, but we made it!

Doesn’t downtown Marietta look so pretty? The fuschia hanging baskets, all the American flags across the Putnam Street Bridge, and the storefronts give me three more reasons to be proud to be from our river town.

We will be open 9:00-3:00 on Memorial Day!

Looking for a fun way to celebrate Memorial Day? The Memorial Day Parade in downtown Marietta starts at 10:00 a.m. on Monday. Many other communities are also celebrating with parades as well. There have been over 1.1 million soldiers that have died in U.S. wars starting with the Revolutionary War. These brave men and women sacrificed their lives for our country, our Constitution, and our freedom. We are eternally grateful to each of them for helping to pave the path of the land of the free!

Congratulations to all the 2024 graduates! I know that college graduations are over and done, but in the last week or so and this weekend there will be many high schools holding their graduations! Best wishes to all of these graduates as they start a new, exciting chapter in their lives! Some join the armed forces while others go into the workforce or continue their education. No matter what you new graduates do next, one thing is for sure, we are SO proud of you!

A huge THANK YOU for your votes in The Marietta Times Reader’s Choice Awards! We were thrilled to hear that Huck’s Farm Market is a top-5 finalist in 7 of the 8 categories we were nominated in: Deli, Bakery, Produce Store, Farmer’s Market, Lunch, Sandwich, and Subs! This next round of voting will start June 15th!

Here is our outside update!

10% off all live plants!

Add some color to your front stoop or porch. There is still plenty to look at and choose from! …..veggies, herbs, fruits, annuals, perennials, succulents, planters, and baskets! There are shade plants and sun lovers.

Here’s what is happening on the inside of Huck’s market….

Do you need a last minute tray for a graduation party or Memorial Day picnic? It’s not too late to order something!

If you are looking for something to take this weekend to your picnic, we have you covered! You could get a pound of Baked Potato Salad, Pasta Salad, Macaroni Salad, or one of the other delicious sides in our deli case. You could take some cheeses, jams, and some Benton or Cabaret crackers. A pie or some cookies might hit the spot as well!

Rhubarb is back in the produce section.

Another shipment of homegrown strawberries is coming on Monday.

For all you coffee lovers….come try our new hand dipped ice cream flavor….Coffee Brew! Yum! It is down below, because we don’t have enough spots up top, so just ask us if that is a flavor you would like. We also have a chocolate dip on some of the cake cones. They are a popular choice! And look for waffle cones this week as well!

If you didn’t know that we have Velvet hand dipped ice cream, here are our flavors: Dutch Chocolate, Cookies and Cream, Cookie Dough, Butter Pecan, Strawberry, Vanilla, Buckeye Classic, Cherry Nut, and Coffee Brew.

Look for our new dip mixes to be on the shelves this week! We are starting with Cucumber Dill and French Onion. Just add sour cream to these classic mixes for veggies and chips. They are so good, plus it’s cheaper and fresher than what you can buy in the store!

This week we were asked to make some small size cemetery saddles. They turned out so pretty! Keep these orders coming! I love making them! Jim and I have a good system. He cuts the flowers apart with wire cutters, and then I arrange them. It’s a good time for us to get to chat for a little bit at the end of a busy day. Old Jimmy always knows how to make me laugh!

Our oldest son, Cam, has started working a couple of days a week at Huck’s. He’s enjoying it so far, and he says there is always something to do! Be sure to say hello to him!

I want to share one of my very favorite products at Huck’s! If you haven’t tried the Vinaigrette by Garlic Expressions, you really should! It’s now my very favorite salad dressing, and every few days, I think to myself, I need to get a Huck’s salad with that Vinegar and Oil dressing. I really do crave it! Lol.

Huck’s can do all sorts of custom made meat, cheese, veggie, fruit, and sandwich trays. These are perfect for meetings, graduation parties, get togethers, reunions, funerals, etc. You can call, message us on Facebook, email us at hucksfarmmarket@gmail.com, or send us a fax at 740-373-0024.

Newsletter #35: May 20-26

Hello! I hope you are all enjoying the beautiful weather! We sure are!

Don’t you love the month of May? It’s the time for planting and enjoying nice, warm days! You know the lazy days of summer are near, and everything looks green and fresh. There are lots of things to celebrate with Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, and graduations. Here are some things I found about this wonderful month!

Today, May 20th, is Armed Forces Day. This is a day to celebrate all of our branches of the military and those who serve! Thank you!

When there is a full moon in May, it is called a Flower Moon!

The emerald was chosen as May’s birthstone, because it signifies rebirth and fertility.

Be sure to find some recipes which use the very first crops of spring: asparagus, strawberries, rhubarb, and spinach. Yum!

Have you heard of these old wives’ tales sayings before?

“Warm January, cold May.”

A dry May and a leaking June
Make the farmer whistle a merry tune.

A snowstorm in May
Is worth a wagon load of hay.

Among the changing months, May stands confessed
The sweetest, and in fairest colors dressed!
–James Thomson, Scottish poet (1700–48)

(almanac.com)

Here’s our outside update!

The warmer temps at night mean that we are out of the woods on frosty mornings! I know Jim is happy with that! There were a lot of evenings that he spent covering flowers!

If you ordered Anderson tomato plants, they are in! There are also extra plants for those of you who didn’t get a chance to order ahead of time!

There are still lots of beautiful and healthy vegetable plants, herbs, and flowers. We have plenty of perennials and annuals. There are lots of colors and different shades of the same colors. Fresh things are still coming weekly, so don’t feel like you are behind! Heck, I haven’t had a chance to plant anything yet, but I’m certainly getting a lot of ideas!

One of the things I love the most about planting….you really can’t mess it up! And sometimes you are pleasantly surprised when you find some new combinations of flowers.

The tea roses have just started to bloom! Oh, my, they are gorgeous! My pictures below don’t do them justice. Look at the icy lavender one….it’s called Blue Girl. It’s a real beauty!

There is a wide array of hanging baskets and planters all ready to go if planting isn’t your thing!

We have many things happening inside as well!

Come get some local homegrown strawberries and rhubarb. Asparagus will be coming in later this week!

Come in for some bi-color corn on the cob. It’s here in time for cookouts for Memorial Day!

We have started to take orders for party trays for graduation parties! Huck’s can make meat trays, cheese trays, veggie trays, sandwich trays, fruit trays, cookie trays, and condiment trays. We have both large and small sizes. The prices and descriptions are in the pictures below.

Memorial Day is only a week away! I have made more cemetery vases with some pretty colors. I will be making some more this week! I am also taking orders for cemetery saddles for the tops of graves. I just made four that were custom made. Check out the pictures below! I can do any color scheme that you would like! Prices for the saddles start at $44.99. They are 3 feet long and 2 feet wide. I know how much it means to us to take care of our loved one’s graves.

Freshly baked breads and baked goods are made daily! Come early if you can, because they go quickly!

There’s plenty of ground sausage in the Zimmerview meat freezer, and we will be restocked with ground beef in the next couple of days!

Who likes meatloaf? Well, we now have Walnut Creek’s Meatloaf Sauce on our shelves! Sounds like a good idea for dinner this week! My very favorite meatloaf recipe is from Trisha Yearwood’s cooking show. It is so tasty, and I bet this sauce will make it over the top!

We got in pint jars of Walnut Creek Sweet Cauliflower as well! Yum! These are sweet and tart at the same time with the perfect combination of sugar and vinegar. There is also some mustard seed inside!

Try some Walnut Creek Mild or Hot Chow Chow. The ingredient list includes cabbage, water, vinegar, sugar, onions, bell peppers, jalapeno peppers, and spices. Sounds like it’s worth trying!

The Amish Wedding pancake syrups have been selling so well, that we decided to add a few more flavors to try: Blueberry, Blackberry, and Butter Pecan! You can still find Raspberry, Strawberry, and Peach! We are also restocked with New Hope Mills Complete and Buttermilk pancake mixes. My family loves breakfast for dinner, so these pancakes are definitely on our rotation.

Don’t forget to get a .79 packet of sauerkraut. These are sitting on top of the deli case. We have pints and quarts, but this is perfect for a lunch or for someone who is the only one in the house who likes sauerkraut!

Everyone loves chps and salsa! I want to highlight the Jose Madrid Salsas that we now carry. First of all, this is a local small business out of Zanesville. They have so many varieties. We are carrying Garden Cilantro Salsa Mild, Peach Mild, Spanish Verde X X Hot, Mild, Hot, and Pineapple Mild. There is one for everyone!

There are lots of ideas for gifts for all occasions! There are gift cards, crafts, and items from Duck Creek Candle Co., Forever Caroline, and Cornerstone Homestead. Check them out if you haven’t already!

Newsletter #34: May 13-19

Hello, everyone! This newsletter is mostly going to be about mothers and flowers! I hope you enjoy it!

First of all, I would like to say Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers reading. Bless you for all you do for your families! I was blessed with the best mother in the whole world! My mom, Ruthie Hall, is fun, funny, sweet, and loves her family more than anything. I also know some of the very best moms around like the moms in my family, at work, friends, etc.! I love you all!

The very first Mother’s Day was actually celebrated in Grafton, WV. Anna Jarvis lived in Philadelphia in 1907 and went home to Grafton to hold a memorial service for her mom after she passed away. She did it at the church her mother attended to honor all of the service her mother contributed to mothers and women. From there, Mother’s Day grew, and in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson made a law that the second Sunday of May would be designated as Mother’s Day. He encouraged everyone to thank their mothers on this special day.

The oldest living mother lives in Catalonia Spain. Her name is María Branyas Morera, and she is 116 years old!

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, a Russian woman who lived in the 1700s holds the record for having the most children. She had 69 children! Many of them were twins, triplets, and even quadruplets! I bet she was exhausted! Lol.

More phone calls are made on Mother’s Day than any other day of the year! Get on that phone to your mama if you haven’t already!

Mother’s Day is the busiest day of the year for restaurants! If most moms are like me, the last thing I want to do on Mother’s Day is cook! Ha! Hope you are reading this, Jimmy!

Mother’s Day is the 3rd highest selling day of the year for plants and flowers! This is a great lead into our weekly update outside!

Newsletter #33: May 6-12

Hello! Aren’t you soooooo happy to see the sunshine! After a miserable and dreary start to the week, we have a beautiful weekend ahead of all of us!!

Yesterday at school, my classes celebrated Cinco de Mayo with fiestas! It’s actually celebrated more in the United States than in Mexico. It is not Mexican Independence Day (that’s in September)…it celebrates the anniversary of the Battle of Puebla when the Mexicans defeated the French on May 5, 1862. Hopefully, you got to celebrate by eating a little comida mexicana!

Do you like mushrooms? It’s Morel Mushroom hunting season! The best time to look for them is during late April through early May. According to the website rootedinohio.com, there are over 2,000 edible mushrooms in Ohio. There are 3 different types of morels. The black ones sprout first, but are the hardest to find. Gray and white are more common. Many people like to sauté or fry them. One important morel hunting tip…don’t pick all of them that you see or they won’t come up again next year!

Don’t forget to vote through Thursday for the The Marietta Times 2023 Reader’s Choice Awards!

Here’s our outside update!

Just a reminder…..Mother’s Day is next Sunday (May 14th)!

Huck’s is in full bloom! With the beautiful warm weekend, it’s the perfect time to think about sprucing up your outside with some bright, cheery colors! If you love to plant, we have tons to choose from! If don’t particularly like to plant, we have planters, bags, and hanging baskets all ready to go!

Have you seen the big, healthy tea roses we have in? They are gorgeous! There are lots of different colors. They are: Blue Girl, Tropicana, Chrysler Imperial, and Midas Touch! Once you are ready to plant, make sure to leave 2-3 feet around it, water it 1″ a week for the first year, and fertilize it three times during the grow season (when you plant it, after the first bloom, and one more time in August.

There is a vast array of herbs and vegetables for planting! Imagine how happy you will be later in the growing season when you can reap the benefits of your labor!

We found Amish Paste and Jet Star tomatoes, so come and get some!

I know many people in our area struggle with deer eating our flowers and plants. Have you ever tried Blood Meal to keep them away? A teacher friend and I were talking about this week at lunch. She said that she sprinkles it around her flowers after she plants, and the deer leave them alone! She said it doesn’t smell at all, but to deer it smells like a fresh kill, so they don’t come near. She also said if it rains, she goes out and sprinkles some more!

Inside is a busy place….!

Sooooo excited to tell you that local, homegrown strawberries are here!! Come and get some of the season’s very best! Just think….strawberry pie, strawberries on your cereal or oatmeal, strawberries plain, strawberries and cream, strawberry cake, etc.! Yum yum!

Homegrown asparagus is here too! We just had some at home this week! Drizzled with a little olive oil with some coarse ground pepper and sea salt, and then roasted at 400 degrees for 20-25 minutes. Heavenly!

We are happy to announce that we have a second slicer in the deli! That means double the amount of meat sliced for the same amount of time. Wahoo!

Jim and I made our first saddle cemetery arrangement! It’s red, white, and blue with a white bow, a little white bird, and an American flag. There are also vase arrangements and more will be coming!

If you haven’t tried our hand-dipped Velvet ice cream, stop in and try a cup or cone!

If you haven’t tried our fresh baked Rye bread, you are missing out! One customer got some Corned Beef from the deli and said you would make my day if you said you had some Rye bread….. and we did! Individual packets of sauerkraut will be back in stock on Wednesday!

Pickled Brussels Sprouts from Walnut Creek are on the shelf!

New product! In the cooler, we now have Walnut Creek Cornmeal Mush! Not sure what to do with it? Eat it like hot cereal. Chill it, slice it up and fry it until it’s a golden brown. Pair it with real maple syrup to have with breakfast or enjoy with your favorite vegetable and meat at dinnertime. Now, for a short history lesson….Cornmeal mush is one of the oldest foods that our ancestors ate during the colonization of the Americas. It was very important to the pioneers as they traveled west to new frontiers. It was affordable, and it wouldn’t spoil making it a perfect side dish or breakfast. It was also a staple food for Yankee and Confederate soldiers during the Civil War. When supplies were scarce or there was no time for cooking during battle time, army cooks could ensure the soldiers had a full belly by serving mush. If it was good enough for our founding fathers, then I say it is good enough for us! (delightedcooking.com)

Newsletter #32: April 29-May 5

Well, April is in the books! It’s been cool for the last week or so, but it looks like it will warm up later this week!

The first round of voting for The Marietta Times Reader’s Choice Awards begins on Thursday, May 4th and goes through Thursday, May 11th! You can vote every single day one time! Jim and I were excited to hear that Huck’s was nominated in 8 categories this year: Farmer’s Market, Crafts, Deli, Bakery, Lunch, Produce Store, Sandwiches, and Subs. If you would like to include Huck’s in your votes this year, that would be awesome!

Prom is in the air! There are many area proms this evening! The Marietta High School Prom theme is “A Night to Remember” with a starry night theme! The kids have worked so hard, and DJ Associates and Events Designs make it as easy as it possibly could! It looks absolutely beautiful! Mrs. Jade Thompson and I are the advisors, so we will be dancing the night away (We wish!)! Ha! If you would like to see all the beautiful gowns and the spiffy tuxes, there is a Prom Walk Through on the Davis side of MHS that starts promptly at 7:15!

Lots is happening outside…….

Flowers and baskets and vegetable plants, oh, my! We are loving our first Spring here at Huck’s! We are getting more and more flowers, vegetables, and each week and will be at full capacity this week!

You can find 15 varieties of tomato plants, multiple types of cabbage, several different cucumber choices, eggplant, canteloupe, watermelon, strawberries, and a vast assortment of peppers ranging from mild to hot.

For those of you who like to add freshness to your cooking, check out our selection of healthy, herbs! They add delicious flavor and really do enhance any dish.

Flowers are my favorite. Every time that I think the pinks are my favorites, then I see the sunny yellows or the cheerful corals and then I can’t decide! That’s why I usually get some of each!

I wanted to show you my window boxes from my porch last year. I planted them using only Huck’s plants. They were gorgeous! Here’s what I included from left to right: miniature licorice, dahlias, geraniums, salvia, celosia, and snowflake. I like to add different heights, and I love to add trailing plants. Some years, I love to plant waves of different colors, and other years I decide to pick one color and do shade variations. I’m not sure what I will do this year, but one thing is for sure, planting flowers is one of my very favorite things to do!

If you are too busy or are unable to plant your own pots, I would love to help you do that! You could drop your pots off, and you could pick out the flowers you would like, and I could plant them. We could even deliver them back to you if necessary.

Once your flowers, ferns, etc. are in place, make sure to do give them a good soaking every other day (Sometimes every day if they are in the sun, and it is very hot!) My mom taught me year and years ago to water until the water is coming out of the bottom, then you know that the plant has gotten enough. For prolific plants, fertilize once a week with Miracle Grow, Compostlife Fertilizer that we sell at Huck’s!

Stop for lunch or an ice cream cone and sit on the side porch! It looks so inviting now that all the flowers are around!

Inside keeps hopping along…..

We have locally grown asparagus! Yay! These were grown in Lowell on the Worthington Farm. What wonderful people they are! I am so thrilled to be able to say we have something that is homegrown! Think of all the wonderful seasonal produce we are all going to be enjoying for the next 6-8 months!

The Goeller Family got 14 little Rhode Island Red chicks this week! They are so cute! They are inside under a heat lamp until they get bigger. Sydney and Audrey are enjoying naming all of them and playing with them. Sydney said she has named “the one with the cold feet Macy.” I’m not sure how she will keep track of that one, since they all look absolutely identical! Lol. Rhode Island Reds make a nice, big brown egg. They are hardy hens and are reliable layers! So, hopefully within 4-5 months we will have some eggs!

We do offer eggs from Amish Country (white and brown) and farm fresh eggs from Fagan Farm. Egg prices have come down (THANK GOODNESS!), and the USDA says that they will drop 30% total this year.

While we are one the subject of eggs….do you like pickled eggs? What about mustard eggs or jalapeno eggs? There are also hot eggs and beet pickled eggs. We also have THE best egg salad I have ever tasted in our deli. It’s great on our freshly baked round kaisers or on some of our Breton or Cabaret crackers. Yum!

Lots of rolled butter, bacon, yogurts, cream cheese, and the increasingly popular Florence Creamery are available in our cooler area!

The snack area is filled to the brim! Try some vanilla clusters or some English Toffee Mix if you want a little chocolate. The English Toffee Mix has toffee coated peanuts, walnuts, and a candy like Milk Duds. It’s really yummy!

We have some cemetery vases with floral arrangements throughout the store. I made all of them different….I don’t know what I was thinking. I guess I was just enjoying myself. Next time, I will make some that are matching, for grave stones that have two areas for flowers, or if you would like to family gravestones to match. I am going to make some saddle arrangements this week, and they will be in by next weekend!

I’m glad that you all are liking our bulk spices. We will be adding some more spices soon, but for now we have Course Black Pepper, Lemon Pepper Seasoning, Cinnamon, and Chili Powder.

If you need a gift, visit our craft area or grab a candle or some handmade soap. Then, you can finish off with a gift bag or wrapping paper and a card from Forever Caroline. If you haven’t gotten a chance to see all of the Appalachian artwork, you are in for a real treat. They have a homey, cozy feel!

Don’t forget all of our baked goods to satisfy your sweet tooth! Amish made fry pies will be back in soon from Whispering Pines Bakery, so be on the look out!

Huck’s can do all sorts of custom made meat, cheese, veggie, and sandwich trays. These are perfect for meetings, get togethers, reunions, funerals, etc. You can call, message us on Facebook, email us at hucksfarmmarket@gmail.com, or send us a fax at 740-373-0024.

CLASS EVENTS:

Family Tree Dental celebrated some of their wonderful dental hygienists by having a private class this week to make a round Welcome sign for spring/summer! This was the first time we had ever done this, and it was wonderful! Duffy led the class and as always does a wonderful job! Thanks ladies for a beautiful evening on the porch!

We would love to start to schedule more private group classes. We can come up with what you want to make, and we can come up with something that works with your price point! Also, it doesn’t have to be a weekend night….sometimes it’s easier to get together like this on a weekday evening.

As I said above, we were able to have our first class outside on the side porch. This is roomy and pleasant! We are definitely going to take advantage of the warmer temps, and once I’m out of school, we will be able to offer more classes!

Dates and prices will be set next week! More summer class will be added as well! If you have an idea, please let me know!

Newsletter #31: April 22-28

It’s already the last week of April! It seems like it was just New Year’s!

The up and down weather can be a little tiresome with baseball games, but overall we have had a nice spring. Sometimes we are all bundled up with scarves and blankets, and other evenings it is just perfect for a game! Next week, the highs are in the 50’s or 60’s, and there are a few nights where the lows will be in the 30’s. Sunday and Monday’s lows are 35, so be on the look for frost!

Today, Saturday, April 22nd, is Earth Day! The very first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970. This was a grassroots demonstration that grew and started environmental legislation being passed in Washington. President Nixon, who was the president at this time, formed the EPA, which led to the Clean Water Act, the Clean Air Act, and the Endangered Species Act.

If you are looking for something to do for Earth Day, The Old Farmer’s Almanac gives some great ideas for ways to celebrate Mother Earth. Here are a couple: plant a tree or plants that help pollinators, buy mulch and potting soil in bulk to reduce the number of plastic bags you use, and pass along your love for plants to your children or grandchildren, so they will continue growing plants as they get older. Finally, the Ohio River Islands National Wildlife Refuge is shuttling people by boat to Buckley Island to plant trees today! You can meet at the Williamstown Boat Ramp between 1-2 p.m.

Here’s our weekly update for outside!

Jim’s been laying block around the sign! He just has to cap it off (whatever that means!), and it will be all done! Looks good, hub!

A couple more shipments of flowers came this week! Here are the details of what you can find here at Huck’s….Geraniums, Snowflake, Sweet Potato vines, Allyson Mexican Heather, Million Bells, petunias, Coleus, Blue Wonder, Dahlias, Impatiens, New Guinea Impatiens, Gerber Daisies, Verbena, Begonias, Dainthus, Vinca, Marigolds, Portulaca, Mojave, Lavender, Bachelor’s Buttons, Succulents, Celosia, Alyssum, Salvia, and Snapdragons.

There are also vegetable plants, strawberries, and perennials as well!

Tea roses (Yay! I LOVE ROSES!) and a bunch more hanging baskets and other plants are on their way! These will be coming soon!

Do you still want to get on the list for those heirloom Anderson tomatoes? It’s still not too late! Give us a call!

Since we have been talking so much about tomatoes in our newsletter the last few weeks, I thought I would highlight a good article I read about what to add to the hole before you plant so that you can be the envy of all your neighbors, family, and friends with the biggest and sweetest tomatoes around! Here is their list: baking soda, fish heads, aspirin, eggshells, epsom salts, kelp meal, bone meal, and/or used coffee grounds. You can try one, a combination, or all eight! Maybe we can experiment and share what worked the best for us….https://balconygardenweb.com/put-8-things-tomato-planting-hole-best-tomatoes-ever/

Here is what’s happening inside….

Graduation is going to be here before you know it! We are now taking orders for meat, cheese, veggie, fruit, and sandwich trays for graduation parties. Let Huck’s take a little of the stress away from you, so you can enjoy celebrating your loved one’s milestone accomplishment!

We had a couple requests for some more Dutch Delights chocolates. Dark Chocolate French Mint and Milk Chocolate English Toffee have both arrived this week! We have ordered Vanilla Creams, and they should come in on Wednesday. I’ll be sure to keep you all updated on their arrival.

We have started to carry a regional salsa from Zanesville called Jose Madrid. It is tasty! We have 6 new pints to try with flavors like Peach Mild, Original Mild, Hot Mild, and Spanish Verde. We really do love to include local businesses at Huck’s, so we are happy to include these products on our shelves.

Duck Creek Candle Co. has just restocked with candles, melts, room sprays and potpourri! They use soy wax, and the best fragrances to get amazing smells like Granny’s Kitchen, Pumpkin Praline Crunch, Fruit Loops, and Honeysuckle.

We are stocked and full of ground beef and ground sausage from Zimmerview Meats and Market. It’s the freshest meat around!

Audrey has been making new bracelets and lip glosses. These have been added to the counter area.

Try the Elderberry Syrup or Yoder’s Good Health Recipe tonic. Jim and I like both of these!

Grab yourself the latest edition of Marietta High School’s The Original for the month of April! It’s a great way to see how the great things that are going on.

There is a big variety of chips to choose from Utz, Conn’s, Mister Bee’s, Frito Lay’s, and Walnut Creek. And there are a number of different snack mixes, peanuts, fudge, pretzels, candies, etc. There is certainly something for everyone!

If you haven’t tried our Velvet hand-dipped ice cream yet, you are missing out. Ask for a sample if you would like!

There are plenty of muffins, cookies, pies, and breads of all types. We hope you will try something new the next time you stop by!

If you are in a hurry and don’t want to wait for us to slice up your deli meat, call ahead and we can get it all ready for you. That way you can get in and out and get on with your day!

I am planning on making more floral grave vases this weekend. I also plan on ordering supplies to make some saddles this week. We can take orders for these. That will ensure you get what you would like to decorate your loved one’s headstone.

Newsletter #30: April 15-21

No April showers this week! This has been the most beautiful Spring week ever! I hope you all have been able to get outside and enjoy the weather! I also love that it is staying lighter later. It makes me happy!

Happy Birthday to our beloved hometown Marietta, Ohio! On Friday, April 7th, Marietta celebrated its 235th birthday! I remember being in the 3rd grade at Phillips Elementary School when Marietta had its Bicentennial in 1988! Our wonderful teachers and principals of Marietta City Schools made sure to march or bus all the elementary students in the school district to Don Drumm Stadium for a celebration! I remember Mayor Nancy Hollister being there, all of us walking around the track, and I got to lead the pledge at the beginning. I’m sure that took a lot of planning, and 35 years later, that is still a great memory to me!

It’s time for The Marietta Times Reader’s Choice Awards! This is a great chance to let our area businesses know how much they mean to you! The nominees have been notified, and the first round of voting begins on May 4-11. Please take a minute during that week to vote once or twice (or actually every single day!). There are so many categories and such a variety of wonderful businesses! Here is a link to the information on how to vote and the nominees! (https://www.mariettatimes.com/readerschoice/#//)

I read a very interesting article this week in “Birds and Blooms” about feeding birds during the spring migration. Spring is actually a great time for bird watching in your backyard. If you keep your bird feeders filled up, prepare to be awed by some new bird visitors as they go north for the summer. Some say that grape jelly and orange slices will attract orioles! I’ll have to tell my mother. She is the queen of bird feeders! (https://www.birdsandblooms.com/birding/attracting-birds/feeding-birds/5-ideas-to-attract-spring-birds/)

I’ve been looking forward to giving our weekly update outside!

The outside of Huck’s is starting to become alive again with flowers and plants! There are combination planters, ferns, and hanging baskets. Remember….this is just the very beginning of what we will get throughout the next month! I’ll make sure to keep you updated on everything as it arrives!

Pepper Plants in stock: Cubanelle, Sweet Banana, Big Bertha, Keystone Giant, Bell Boy, Orange Glaze, Golden Summer, Red Beauty, Hungarian Wax, Habanero, Cayenne Longslim, and Jalapeno

There is also rhubarb, cabbage (Red, Late Flat Dutch, Stonehead, Golden Acre, and Early Flat Dutch), squash (Yellow Straight Neck and Yellow Crookneck), zucchini (Dark Green), cucumbers (Straight 8, Burpless, Bush Crop, Homemade Pickles, lettuce (Great Lake), celery, eggplant, brussel sprouts (Jade Cross), broccoli, kohlrabi, cauliflower, and strawberries (All Star Junebearing and Quinault Everbearing).

Don’t forget….we are taking orders for Anderson tomato plants. It’s a delicious, big, pinkish-red tomato. You don’t want to miss out!

I want to give a big shout out to the newly-retired Randy Richards and our boys, Cam and Seth, for helping Jim get the greenhouse ready to house our plants for the season! When you get plenty of help to pitch in, it sure does go fast. Thanks a bunch! And guys….what do you think about picking up a paint brush?? Hint! Hint!

The porch area is set up for you to enjoy your lunch outside if you would like. We love it when you come and sit for a bit!

We are getting in a shipment of perennials on Monday (April 17th)! Here’s what you will be able to find…..Yarrow, Ajuga, Bluestars, Astilbe, Bellflowers, Coreopsis, Ice Plants, Coneflowers, Blanket flowers, Day Lilies, Lavender, Loosestrifes, Catnip, Beardtongues, Phlox, Salvia, Sedum, Lamb’s Ear, Veronica, and Asiatic Lilies. There are too many varieties of each one to name here, but once they come, I will do lots of pictures. Herbs will be in this bunch as well!

Jim has been working on updating the sign area with some block. When he was taking out the railroad ties this week, he dropped one on his toe! If you see him hobbling a little bit, that’s why. It’s the deepest shade of purple I’ve ever seen! Ouch.

Here is what is happening inside…..

Our hours are later! Monday through Friday 9-6:30, Saturday 9-5, and Sunday 11-5. See ya then!

The hand-dipped ice cream is starting to catch on! For now, you can get a cup, a cake cone, or a sugar cone. We have nine flavors: Vanilla, Dutch Chocolate, Strawberry, Buckeye Classic (it’s down underneath, so you will have to ask for it), Moose Tracks, Mint Chocolate Chip, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Cherry Nut, and Cookies and Cream.

I’ve started to make some cemetery vases since Memorial Day is coming up pretty soon. These will be in the store this week! I know a lot of us make sure to put something new at the graves of our loved ones every so often. This will stay a year round thing at Huck’s, and if you have a color combination for me to make you, I will gladly do that! I’m going to be graduating to cemetery saddles soon!

Our canned goods section is stocked up and ready for purchase. Our prices are comparable to all the other grocery stores around, and the name Walnut Creek or Amish Wedding guarantees that the quality is the highest you can find around!

Did you know that Huck’s can make custom made cakes and cupcakes? Along with our delicious breads, cookies, and other goodies, we can make you any cake or cupcake for any occasion!

Look very soon for some made from scratch Raspberry Filled Cookies again. You have asked, and we listened!

Have you ever thought of having a get together at Huck’s with your cousins, sisters, girlfriends, church group, or workmates with a craft class, light refreshments, and an evening of fun and fellowship? Especially now, when the weather is warm and we can be outside, we would like to have you get a group together, and we can do the rest!

Newsletter #29: April 8-14

Happy Easter weekend to you all! I am looking forward to a great holiday weekend! We plan on coloring Easter eggs, hunting eggs, cooking, and relaxing. Most importantly, we are going to be celebrating the Resurrection of Jesus! AMEN to that!

We have been on Spring Break this week and have enjoyed every minute of it! We got to spend a couple of days over at Hocking Hills for Jim’s birthday. That’s a great place to go, and it is nice that it’s not that far away! Thanks to all of you who sent well wishes to Jim on his birthday. He said how nice that was!

Here’s the weekly update for the outside……

It’s finally time!!! The first delivery of plants and flowers will start this week! Ferns, hanging baskets, strawberry and rhubarb plants, vegetable plants, Black eyed Susans with trellis, and combination flower baskets! If you get a chance, stop in later this week to add some early color to your outside.

Since I have had a little extra time this week, I have been reading more about heirloom tomatoes! In fact, I think I have found myself a new gardening hobby! Heirloom tomatoes cross pollinate naturally from bees. Since they are mostly regional, they are usually pest resistant and have developed immunity to many diseases over time. They also have a wide variety of shapes and colors.

I have another neat story about an Ohio heirloom tomato called Aunt Lou’s Underground Railroad. These tomato seeds crossed over the Ohio River at Ripley, Ohio by an unnamed slave fleeing to the North from Kentucky. He gave some seeds to an older woman named Lou who gave them to her great nephew. As one gardener on the website tomatoville.com said, “If this man thought this tomato was special enough to bring with him on his journey to freedom, then it is special enough to be in my garden.” This is a pinkish-red, juicy tomato. I am going to grow some this year, and hopefully will get enough seeds to start some plants for all of us for next year!

Just a reminder that we are now taking orders for the Anderson tomato plants again this year! I am trying to find the history of this heirloom tomato, but I’m having some trouble. I have read it’s from Pennsylvania, and I have heard it was from West Virginia. If you know its history, please call or message Huck’s, so we share this information with our readers and customers.

We still have some white and red onion sets left. Price is $1.79 per pound.

Kennebec potato seeds are available as well!

Earthbrew Vermincompost Tea is on the shelf ready for fertilizing your veggie plants and flowers!

Here is our inside update for the week to come…..

We will be closed on Easter Sunday!

NEW HOURS start on Monday! Our hours will be extended until 6:30 p.m. through the week and until 5:00 on Saturday and Sunday.

Stop in for your last minute Easter basket goodies or items for your Easter celebration!

We are excited to announce that Velvet hand-dipped ice cream is back after a few years at Huck’s! We have nine delicious flavors which include: Original Vanilla, Dutch Chocolate, Strawberry, Moose Tracks, Buckeye Classic, Mint Chocolate Chip, Cherry Nut, Cookies and Cream, and Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. We have cups and cones now, and we are looking for containers to make some hand pressed pints as well. Prices start at $2.79! Makes me think summer is coming!

The owners of Duck Creek Candle Company have been busy making potpourri! They have stocked the candle cupboard at Huck’s with large sizes of Country Apple and small sizes in a variety of scents. When you are doing your spring cleaning, there’s nothing better sprucing up your decor with new potpourri!

Cornerstone Homestead has also been in to restock. There is a new product for the bearded men of Huck’s, Beard Oil! It comes in Unscented, Clover and Aloe, Tobacco and Bay, and Midnight Forest. These come highly recommended and smell great! The salves are filled up, and there are new soaps. There is one called Gardener Soap. It looks perfect for scrubbing up your hands and nails after a day in the dirt!

Vicky from Hot Chocolate Bombs and More brought in some solid chocolate bunnies for Easter. They come in sets of three in a combination of Cookies and Cream, Peanut Butter, Milk Chocolate and Dark Chocolate. Plus, they are so cute. They look like real, tiny baby bunnies!

Audrey made 10 more bracelets in different patterns and colors! She is also going to be making more mini lip glosses ASAP. She started with 50 and now there are only 2 left. She is so happy that you all like them!

Instead of throwing away the ends and scraps of the meats and cheeses, we have decided to make up little doggie bags for your 4-legged pooches. A bag of scraps is only $1.50. Your furry BFF will enjoy a treat bag from Huck’s every once in a while!

Have you seen our freshly baked blueberry muffins? They are big and full of blueberries. They are perfect for breakfast or a snack. Try it with a pint of Florence Creamery’s flavored milks.

We are now selling delicious egg salad! I think some people are put off by the name, but if you like deviled eggs, you will think this egg salad is tasty!

Two new snack options are packaged up and ready to go! Peanut Butter Crunch is similar to the always popular Puppy Chow. It is rice biscuit cereal squares covered with a peanut flavored coating, milk chocolate and powdered sugar. The Honey Island Mix includes: Honey roasted peanuts, honey roasted sesame sticks, banana chips, dried pineapple, dried papaya, roasted salted cashew pieces. Yum!

We have the most delicious salsas….Pineapple, Mild, Spicy, Peach, etc., but have you ever tried the Walnut Creek tortilla chips? They come in white corn and yellow corn. My favorite thing about them is they are the perfect bite size. Hopefully, you will try a bag the next time you stock up on some salsa!

Customer Suggestion: The Amish Wedding Cinnamon Peach Syrup and Vanilla Peaches are delicious on top of pancakes. That sounds like a winning combination! Thanks for the recommendation!

Newsletter #28: April 1-6

Happy Saturday to you all! First of all, I can’t believe I’m writing my 28th newsletter! Every week I wonder if I will have enough to write about, and I always do! That’s one of the things we love about Huck’s…..there’s never a dull moment with different holidays and seasons. It really is the perfect place for us!

How was your week? We have had a great week, except for that wind last weekend!! I am sure some of you lost your power. We were out for 48 hours. Sydney really enjoyed herself! When I picked her up from school on Monday and told her that we had electric again, she said, “Awww, I was having so much fun.” Lol. She must have thought she was Laura Ingalls.

In all seriousness, it makes for a very stressful time when the power is out. Everyone has to make sure loved ones are okay and clean up tree limbs and shingles. Some of you had much more damage than that to contend with. They are saying there could be gusts of 50-60 mph winds today, so let’s be praying that all will be well this weekend!

Last night we enjoyed ourselves at our Round Sign and Bow Making Class! I have added pictures of what everyone made for you to see! It’s amazing how unique they all are even when everyone was doing the same project! Also, scroll down to the EVENTS section of the newsletter to see the details for the Easter Cabbage Flower Arrangement. This would make the perfect addition to your Easter dinner table! We are making these next Friday evening and would love to have you come!

Here is our weekly update for outside!

Our first shipment of plants will be coming the week of April 11th! I am so looking forward to this!

Come get some ramps this weekend and try them in one of your special dishes!

Many of you have been asking about an old, heirloom tomato plant called an Anderson tomato plant. Jay Huck has some Anderson tomato seeds and is going to be growing some for us to sell at Huck’s! We will hopefully have 20 flats available, so you may want to call to make sure that you are on the list to get some! For those of you who are unfamiliar with Anderson tomato plants, they are indeterminate and grow a juicy, big, pink tomato. I actually have never seen one before, so I’m excited to try a couple of these plants in my garden this year!

Heirloom seeds are different than regular seeds. Heirloom seeds are seeds that have been around for at least 50 years without human intervention. Typically, they are regional and have been passed down for generations through families and communities. Most of you have heard about a Mortgage Lifter tomato. This popular heirloom tomato has a really neat story. It was developed in the 1930’s in Logan, WV by a radiator repairman named Mr. Byles. He crossed 4 of the largest tomatoes he could find and created this new, hardy tomato. Apparently, people drove 200 miles to buy his tomato plants for $1 each. Mr. Byles was able to pay off his $6,000 mortgage with the sales of his tomato plants in six years. That’s how it got’s its name “Mortgage Lifter”. A Mortgage Lifter tomato has a pretty pinkish-red flesh and is one of the best tomatoes for a summer BLT! You can read about all types of heirloom tomato plants at ohioheirloomseeds.com

We have gotten in some big jars of Vermicompost Tea by Earthbrew. You mix 1 cup with a gallon of water and it will fertilize your plants while keeping diseases and pests at bay!

New things are also happening on the inside……

This is the last week to get some Easter chocolates and goodies for your Easter baskets!

There are also lots of baked goods that would compliment your Easter dinner! We are now taking orders for our freshly baked rolls, pies, cookies, carrot cakes, bunny cakes, etc. Please have your orders for carrot cakes or bunny cakes in by Wednesday, so our bakers can prepare!

We will be CLOSED on Easter Sunday! I am so thankful for the cross and all that it means! The Lord is so very good!

NEW HOURS!! Now that winter is over, we will be extending our hours a little bit! Starting Monday, April 10th we will stay open until 6:30 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays we will stay open until 5:00 p.m.

One of Jim’s favorite things that he sampled at the Walnut Creek Food Show was the Walnut Creek Pastrami. We ordered some for the deli, and it came in last week. He says it is delicious!

You still have a couple of weeks to get your potato seeds and onion sets planted for a fall harvest. We have your choice of red, white, or yellow onion sets for just $1.79 per pound. Kennebec potato seeds are just $1.59 per pound. If you don’t want to plant in the ground, try one of the potato growing bags for an easy no digging option.

The Yoder’s Good Health Recipe Tonic is selling so well, that we thought we would add the Yoder’s Elderberry Syrup to go along with it. According to the website, “Organic Elderberries extracted in glycerin at low heat to retain the potency and benefits of the Elderberries. Raw honey and fruit juice are added in for a tasty, healthy, treat the whole family will enjoy. Suggested use: Take 1-2 spoonfuls a day.” It’s supposed to strengthen our immune systems, so we can fight off any bugs that come our way!

Have you tried the Amish wedding Old Fashioned Applesauce or the Old Fashioned Cinnamon Applesauce. They are both delicious for an easy side dish for supper or as a snack. You can really taste the difference compared to the applesauce you buy off the shelf at the grocery store. I love both of them equally!

We have added a couple of more items to the snack area. You can now pick up a bag of Key Lime Covered Pretzels, Dark Chocolate Covered Pretzels, and /or Mini Yogurt Covered Pretzels. Yum!

Velvet Ice cream is going to be coming back to Huck’s later this week! Here are the hand dipped flavors you will be able to get: Original Vanilla, Dutch Chocolate, Strawberry, Cookies and Cream, Mint Chocolate Chip, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Cherry Nut, Buckeye Classic, and Moose Tracks. You will be able to get cups or cones. I’ll give more details next week once it comes in!

We can take your business delivery orders starting on Monday, April 10th! We had to push it out one more week, but we are looking forward to offering this service to our wonderful customers!

I’ve learned how to tag the wonderful small businesses that are a part of Huck’s! If you get a chance, click on their Facebook pages and follow them! They would be very appreciative!
