Welcome to summer! Although it doesn’t feel like it. Lol. Someone said it feels like October, someone else said it feels like late March or early April, either way it doesn’t feel like summer! In fact, Sydney, Jim, and I were watching Cam play baseball this week and everyone had on sweatshirts and was covered up with blankets. That’s a first for this time of year!

I know that I write with a lot of exclamation points. I go back and forth every week about this. This is not good writing practice, but I’m so happy and excited about Huck’s! Writing with plain old periods just doesn’t match with my thoughts and feelings about one of my favorite places!

Something fun in town for kids 1st grade thru 12th grade to do next week….the Missoula Children’s Theater is putting on the play “Beauty Lou and Country Beast” at the People’s Bank Theatre! Auditions are Monday from 10-12! Check out this article in The Marietta Times for more info! http://www.mariettatimes.com/news/local-news/2023/06/missoula-childrens-theatre-to-hold-auditions/

I subscribed to a new magazine for Jim and me. Have you ever heard of Backwoods Home magazine? It comes out quarterly, and we just received our first issue, and I love it! It is filled with recipes, gardening and canning information, articles on farming and growing your own food, as well as other self-reliance topics! I think some of you would enjoy it too! I’ll put a link to the website in case you want to check it out! www.backwoodshome.com

Here’s our outside update…..

Big shout out to our awesome neighbors at Greenleaf Landscaping! They took out some bushes and a dead tree for us that were on the far side of Huck’s. Jim and his twin brother, Andy, grew up going to St. Mary’s Catholic with the Lang boys, and Mike Knighten took care of this quickly! He has the nicest family, and we have known them for many years! Great, great people! We have some plans for that side of the market, and that was the first step! Thank you!

We are hoping we get some sunny days to keep at the painting outside!

Mark your calendar! Do you remember how we are wanting to have a Community Plant Swap this fall? Well, it will start on Friday, September 22 and go through Sunday, October 1st! If you have any perennials that you are wanting to thin out, please bring them, and we will lay them out on the pallets under the greenhouse! Then, you can take clumps from what others bring as well! It is free, but we will be taking donations of non-perishable cans of food for the food pantry at Marietta First Church of the Nazarene! This will be a win-win situation for everyone! The pantry gets stocked, you thin out your garden and get some new varieties of healthy looking plants! We are excited!

Take a look at the beautiful, black Asiatic Lily in the pic below! I was picking up Sydney’s friend to go to VBS, and I told her mom how much I loved the black lily she had growing in her front garden! I had never seen one like it before! The next day she stopped into Huck’s with a clump to share! It’s called “Black Wizard.” Thanks so much, Carrie!

My brother, Chad, likes hearing that his adorable rooster at the door has people asking if it’s for sale! I asked him if he would make some more….he said maybe one a year! Ha!

Now, onto the inside……

We are taking orders until July 5th for the Michigan Tart Cherries! Here are the prices: 10 # slush pack ($47.99); 27# slush pack ($99.99); 2- 5# bags of Individual Quick Frozen ($44.99). Cherries will arrive on August 2nd! You can order by calling in, messaging us on Facebook, or at the register! Don’t miss out!

PRODUCE UPDATE! From the South: seedless watermelon, corn on the cob, candied onions, cantaloupe, stringless green beans, and strawberries

Homegrown and local: zucchini, squash, cabbage, Ohio apples, and broccoli

Plus, we always carry all the usual grocery staples like peppers, potatoes, yams, bananas, lettuce, etc.

We will keep adding items as they become available! I’m hearing it won’t be long until we have local, homegrown cantaloupe! And homegrown sweet corn is only a couple weeks away! Yum!

We got a lovely review on the corn on the cob from down south! One customer said it is delicious! She wraps it a paper towel and microwaves it for 3 minutes! Thanks for letting us know, Mary Jo!

Last night for supper, I took one of our candied onions, a zucchini and two squash, chopped them up, and sautéed them in a little bit of olive oil….Oh, my! It was delicious! I added some of our Rotini noodles and made meat sauce using the Amish wedding pasta sauce. It was a great summer meal!

Cuts of homegrown chicken and turkey have arrived from Cornerstone Homestead! Right now, they are located in our big freezer outside. Just ask, and we will grab you some!

NEW! Sandwich spread will be added later this week! One of our ladies has been working on a recipe similar to what her mom used to make when she was young. She said she finally got it figured out and is ready to share it with you guys! For those of you who aren’t familiar with Sandwich Spread….it is similar to Ham Salad but uses Bologna instead!

The bakery and deli are always hopping with the best quality items possible! If you haven’t tried our homemade No Bake cookies yet, please do! They are delectable!

I appreciate you trying our new no bake desserts like Caramel Chocolate Delight and Banana Pudding! This week we are adding Orange Pineapple Fluff Salad! I thought I would tell you that it has cottage cheese in it, but don’t let that turn your nose up, it’s delicious and reminds me of holidays at my Grandma’s house as a little girl! She always made this! This week we are offering an introductory price of just $1.00 for an individual size of any of these. Try them out and see what your tastebuds think!

My girls each got a scrunchie from Madi D’Ettorre’s Sew Cute Scrunchies collection at Huck’s! They are so cute and only $2.99! I’m glad these young girls are wanting to start a little business of their own! They are go-getters!

Walnut Creek and Amish Wedding Jars are stocked up!

We got some antique, romantic looking earrings and necklaces. They are very pretty! Check them out by the register!

If you are looking for a gift, check out our crafts, candles by Duck Creek, soaps and scrubs by Cornerstone Homestead, and notepads and cards by Forever Caroline!
